O' My God - The Heaven's Gate CultWilliam DubyThe news media is delighting in a feeding frenzy since 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed mass suicide. Nothing could be better for the news-mongers than the sensational story of crazy people going off the deep end. People do it all the time but when 39 people do it at once, it makes headlines. Amazing isn't it? And to make things worse the psychologists on television give their expert psycho-babble as to the varied reasoning why these people did what they did. I am amused when the professionals talk. A lot of words are spoken but nothing worthwhile is said that makes any sense in the real world. These people did what they did because their mind was twisted the same as anybody else that kills themselves.
The news-mongers are having a field day. Cult . . . cult . . . all we hear about now are the dangers of cults. If you think about it . . . each administration of the White House is a cult. Aren't the presidential groupies fans of the leader?
Fanatics exist everywhere at every level of society. The news-mongers in the media are a cult. And, believe it or not, they are just as dangerous as Hitler because they thrive on manipulating the emotions of the human community. These characters are always looking for sensational stories. And nothing sells newspapers and televisions shows more than smut. All the elements for a "great story" were there. A radical ex-choir director with terminal cancer castrates himself because he felt he had homosexual tendencies. To prove their devotion, many of the followers castrated themselves, as well. As said, time and time again, "birds of a feather flock together." These people were tuned into the same wave lengths. It just happened to be that the length of the waves were far out, very far out. In fact, these people were "Trekies" - Star Trek fanatics and UFO fans. It is amazing what we can dream up when the imagination is not harnessed. It simply runs away with you when you are not grounded. Just maybe, don't quote me on this, of course - but maybe - the big brother they were going to meet on this space ship was none other than the late Gene Roddenbury, the Creator of Star Trek. Could it be that Gene was sending messages to this ex-choir director turned cult leader? I am intentionally making fun of the sad situation to prevent myself from feeling bad about something that is not my problem. People everywhere do crazy things for crazy reasons. Jesus is reported to have said that we will always have the poor in spirit with us. These poor souls lost their mind, an easy thing to do in today's society. I don't feel sorry for them. It was their thing. They did what they "thought" to do. If they would have thought differently, things would be different, they'd be alive today. But they didn't and that's that. As far as I am concerned they missed the kingdom (the place they were searching for) because it isn't outside. It is in the place they refused to look; namely, inside. It was inside all the time but they "thought" to go outside, way outside, outside this world. In a way, they are teaching us a lesson that "thoughts are things." We all need to be careful what we think. I shutter to think about destroying my body or the body of any other human being. These people failed themselves miserably because they didn't have a "fear of God" to prevent them from suicide. My religion teaches me that it is just as much of a crime against nature to kill yourself as it is to kill another. Murder is murder that is murder. In truth, it is playing God. And whenever you play God, you do what you do because your intent is to do it on purpose. The Heavens Gate cult without a doubt lost their mind. The whole idea of a space ship traveling behind the "Hale Bopp" comet is so far out that only a crazy individual would believe such non-sense. It is sort of like me telling you that I have the authority to sell you the Golden Gate Bridge. It's ridiculous. You'd think nobody could believe such a tall tale. Yet, thirty-nine people bought it hook, line and sinker. The moment I heard the news flash on the television I was amused. The first thing that came to mind was the verse in the Bible that goes something like, "Unless my Spirit comes soon no flesh can be saved." I pray for the sake of us all that we get smart for Christ sake and drop the self righteousness. What happened to the members of the Heaven's Gate cult happens to everyone when the mind doesn't keep us well. And it can't keep us well unless we think well with it. Remember and learn well - the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. And, if you think it is, get over it. Get over it before it is too late. Copyright © 1997 Sterling Rose Press, Inc.
