How To Maintain Femininity In The Technology Environment
By Jenny Knowles

More and more the field of technology (what isn’t technology anymore?) is balancing out between the sexes. For most of history, though, the area of computers and technology has been innovated and maintained by men. So what happens as women begin to move into this field?
I can share my experience. I love learning and working with computers, and I learned about them from men who were willing to share their time and teach me. So how did I fit into this male-dominated environment? I became one of the guys!
Unfortunately, I ended up taking pretty poor care of my body. Working many hours straight late into the night, I was always in jeans, hair pulled back, eating poorly, and never exercising. After a couple of years, I felt pretty bad about my female body. I had lost my femininity to the technology environment. What to do?!?
We all have both male and female polarities within us. Our mind represents the male quality of ourselves, and the body represents the female side. When we put too much emphasis on one and not the other, we are out of balance.
To restore balance in my own life, I realized I needed to put more attention on caring for my body. Exercising more and doing things specifically to validate my female body balanced out all the mental work I spent 99% of my time doing. For me, this has been a very powerful transforming experience. I believe taking care of your body makes for a happier, more balanced person, male or female, and is especially important for women.
Another important point is that female bodies run a higher voltage of energy through them than male bodies. This is our femininity. You may have noticed the difference watching women being able to carry on three conversations at once, and often leaving men in the dust as they are talking.
Because of the higher voltage of energy, the female body requires a specialized kind of attention that is different than what a male body needs. It is akin to a Ferrari needing more specialized maintenance than a Chevy truck. Both are very good vehicles, but very different.
With this extra energy, I found it was easy to go into competition with men around computer projects. The energy that ran through my female body was faster than theirs. I thought, “I can do this faster, and I can do this better.” I did this to the same guys who just gave their time and knowledge to teach me!
On an energy level, when we go in to competition with anyone, we are saying we can do it better than that person, the Universe says, “Okay, Go ahead and try!” and we take on that person’s energy. When a woman goes into competition with a man, she takes on his energy. That’s like putting the Chevy engine into the Ferrari – it’s not going to work! The female body gets weighed down with male energy, and loses its sparkle of femininity.
It is an old adage, “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” I believe this phrase speaks to the right use of female energy. Femininity has the astonishing power, when it is used correctly, to be a unifying force. For me, when I find myself in competition, or another way of putting it is wanting to take over a project or situation, I have the power to use my energy another way.
I can validate and respect those who have taught me. I can remind myself that I don’t know everything and I need the help of the men around me. I can appreciate that everyone present has something valuable to contribute to the team. I can find what others are contributing, and support them. In all these ways, I am validating myself and my femininity by using it rightly. I am not taking on other’s energy, and it’s a win-win situation for all involved.
It’s a practice, and I am still practicing all the time. But it is nice to know that men and women CAN work together, for the benefit of all involved.
