Aromatherapy-The Use of Essential OilsBy Nancy GrundyClary Sage In Germany, clary was originally used to simulate true muscatel wine. The leaves, used with vinegar, either by itself or with a little honey, will help clean boils. In Jamaica, it is used to cool and clean ulcers and used for inflammation of the eyes. The oil is clear, and has a sweet, nutty scent. The taste is warm and moderately bitter. Clary blends well with oils of juniper, lavender, sandalwood. It is a good oil used as a general tonic. Its tonic affects particularly the nerves, stomach, kidneys and uterus. Its effect on the nervous system is sedative and anti convulsive. It also produces a mild form of euphoric intoxication. However, very large doses would result in poisoning and a severe headache. Clary is good for nervous, weak, fearful types. It is useful in all types of debility, whether physical, mental, nervous or sexual. It is useful in nervous depression and weakness of spirit. It is effective in cases of depression which often accompanies brute physical illness, such as the flu and in cases of post-natal depression. As an anti-convulsive-euphoric sedative, clary is indicated in nervous, hysterical, paranoid, panicky states of mind. It is good for painful periods, for lack of or scanty menstruation and is a useful oil for inhalation, fumigation or compresses during childbirth. It encourages labor at the same time that it helps the mother to relax. It is well known for strengthening the kidneys and stomach. Externally it cools inflammation, and is much used in skin care because of its scent. It is reputed to feed the soul and is helpful in getting through rough and meager times; especially stress from outside pressures. It is recommended for people involved in creative works. It opens the path to unknown, unusual, and creative influences. A diffuser next to a creative project will inspire. It also calms and enhances the dream state. It encourages us to do the things we have not done in a long time- so its said to be especially good for mid-life crisis. It regulates the cells and balances the hormones. It helps with circulation problems and with hemorrhoids.
It is THE CROWN JEWEL of all flowers, the most precious of all heavenly scents. It refreshes the soul and brings joy to hearts. No other flower has touched as many hearts; it fulfills the inner longing of the spirit. The rose is a symbol of completeness; for spirit. It is assigned to the heart and it balances the whole body through that channel. The essential oil of rose has a deep psychological effect. It balances things out of perspective, especially having to do with the heart. It comforts in sadness, dissolves pain, and opens doors to love, friendship and compassion. When the heart is closed from grief or sadness, the body's energies cannot be balanced and then the body becomes more vulnerable to illness. Rose oil helps dissolve blockages and depression. It works on the inner and outer bodies. It relieves mood swings during pregnancy and childbirth and is especially good for depression after childbirth. Rose oil reduces fear and is a good companion for very sick people or those with terminal illnesses. Even in very small doses it has a powerful effect. To produce one pound of essential rose oil it takes 5,000 pounds of fresh petals. The rose petals, like with jasmine and tuberose, must be picked before sunrise, because their oil content is diminished later in the day. The oil is extracted by steam distillation. Only a few rose species are cultivated for oils and used for distillation, such as the damask rose, primarily grown in Bulgaria, which has the best rose-growing plantation in the world. There are other less expensive rose oils from Tunisia and Morocco, but Bulgaria rose oil is far superior. Rose oil reduces infection and relieves cramps. It is effective for migraine headaches in compresses. It helps heal shingles. For heart complaints, make a chest rub of 1 drop of undiluted oil once a day. It also balances women's hormones. It is good for conjunctivitis, infected wounds and fever. It is also a good douche for vaginitis. It is ideal for massages, especially for children. It helps calm and reduce inflammation. It is also good for teething problems in children and gingivitis in adults. There are many fake rose oils on the market today, produced from cheaper plants. The buyer must beware when buying rose oil. Demand rose oil made from real rose plants.
