Psychomanteum~A Room With a ViewBy Deborah Livingston

Lahrs "When I sat inside the Psychomanteum, my intention was to see my Dad who had passed away five years ago. Not long after I began gazing into the mirror, I was acutely aware of a male sitting next to me. He looked to be in his twenties, and I didn't recognize him at first. Then his face changed, very quickly, and I realized it was my grandfather, sitting right beside me! He smiled, and then I noticed another male sitting behind him....my great grandfather whom I had never met. I felt a loving presence all around me." D. Livingston A Psychomanteum is a room which has been specially set up to see and/or communicate with people who have passed over to the spirit realm. An older expression of this is called "Mirror Gazing", and there are numerous testimonies from people from all walks of life who have seen "apparitions" while gazing into a mirror. Some of these visions were intentional, in the sense the people wanted to make contact with loved ones who had departed, while others were spontaneous apparitions, meaning the spirits just appeared as if out of no where. History goes as far back as ancient Greece, Egypt and even the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia, where special buildings were erected to facilitate healings and to contact the spirit world, or, Middle Realm. Probably the most familiar were the "sleep temples", or, dream-incubation temples of Asklepios. Like a modern day Mayo Clinic, people of that time who were unable to be cured of an illness would journey to one of these temples. In short, they would be put into a trance state of altered consciousness. The attending priest and/or physician would then give positive suggestions to their subconscious mind to facilitate healing. Often the patients would have dreams or see visions while in this trance state. Upon emerging, they would be healed. In his book, Reunions: Visionary Encounters With Departed Loved Ones, author Raymond Moody, M.D. (who may be best known for his book, co-written with Paul Perry, Life after Life) talks about the healing process which can be achieved by making contact with departed loved ones. In his pursuit to validate his theory, he himself has constructed a modern day Psychomanteum. Many people he has worked with walk away feeling at peace, knowing their loved ones are doing fine, while others have actually healed the relationship between themselves and the person who passed on; parents have been comforted by communicating with children who died, and children of deceased parents have been able to experience a sense of completion. The testimonies at the beginning of this article are from people who have sat in the Psychmanteum we have constructed at the Academy For Psychic Studies. Even children have gone into the room and seen and communicated with spirit! I personally love to go into the Psychoman-teum. I always end each session feeling relaxed, my mind more clear, and a certainty of knowing that even when we leave these physical bodies, life does indeed continue.
