Have You Heard What You've Been
Saying To Yourself Lately
By Jenny Knowles
I have helped in training many people to use computers. It fascinates me. To use a computer effectively, you must harness your mind. So often a novice computer user will say, “It’s broken!” when the desired result is not achieved. All too often, it is operator error that is the source of the problem. Computers have no choice but to do what we tell them to do. If something isn’t turning out the way we want, it is most often because we have not given the computer the correct set of instructions.
Our minds operate very similarly to a computer. The thoughts we think are like programs: they are instructions that deliver a desired, or possibly undesired, result. What we are saying to ourselves in mind are the instructions we are giving ourselves for what we will experience.
Have you heard what you’ve been saying to yourself lately? Take a look around at your outer circumstances. How do you feel about the people and situations in your life? Happy? Uncomfortable? Angry? Depressed? What you are feeling is a key indicator of what you have been saying to yourself.
Shakespeare said, “Nothing of itself is good or bad, but our thinking that makes it so.” This is so true! So often we have been trained to use our minds to label our experiences as “good” or “bad”. We have a running commentary going all day long. And so our experiences are for us. Our mind is always listening to the input we are giving it, and it responds accordingly.
Even more powerful than the thoughts we think are the words that come from our mouths. If you really want to know what you are saying to yourself, listen to what and how you communicate to others. You can bet that whatever you are saying, it has been said even louder within to yourself.
What can we do…? Many people have proclaimed the value of positive thinking. It can be very effective. If you are consciously aware of a negative thought, you can consciously change it to a positive thought. It may not be as easy as it sounds though, if you’ve been in the habit of thinking or reacting negatively. And what about the negative thinking you’re not aware of? For this reason, I believe the old adage is true; Silence is Golden.
Rev. William Duby taught, “Everything that is yours to know, you realize. Everything that is not yours, you think about.” Truthfully, if the thoughts were ours at all, we wouldn’t be thinking them, we would just be. The safest place to be is in the silence of our minds. Or, as your friends or family may have told you when you were getting yourself into trouble, “Just Shut Up!”
You have the power to think or not think a thought. By not thinking, all the negative circumstances in your life begin to unravel themselves, as the negative thinking clears like heavy smoke from our minds. This is a good, abundant universe, and our experience of it will return to that state naturally as soon as our minds are clear.
