Healing With Eucalyptus OilBy Nancy GrundyThe Latin name for Eucalyptus is globulus. There are over 300 species of eucalyptus. It is one of the largest trees in the world and grows up to 300 feet. The oil is extracted from the fresh leaves of the tree. It is a very strong oil which has many medicinal uses. Eucalyptus trees were planted in swampy areas to deter mosquitoes. The huge root system helps drain the mosquitoes breeding ground and the insect repellent quality of the leaves discourages the insects. If you have a problem with mosquitoes in your home you can hang the leaves at your doorway or other entry way to deter them. The oil can also be rubbed on the skin to prevent being bitten. Eucalyptus is a strong antiseptic. The aborigines used it for injuries to prevent infections and for reducing fevers. The strong anti-viral, antiseptic and expectorant action of this essence renders it valuable for most respiratory infections. It is extremely useful rubbed onto the chest for respiratory infections. Using it in inhalations is effective as it helps call off the invading microbes. It can be used as well as an air spray to kill off airborne microbes and freshen the room. Eucalyptus is extremely effective in bringing down high temperatures by using cold compresses on the forehead, hands and feet. It is an effective local pain killer for chicken pox, cold sores, shingles and also mildly anti-spasmodic. It is useful for muscular sprains and discomfort, and when diluted is indicated for rheumatic arthritis. It can be used in baths, massage oil and with compresses. For massage oil: 10 drops of essence in 20 ml of vegetable oil. For compress: 1-2 drops of essential oil in a bowl of cold, tepid or hot water. Place a handkerchief gently in the surface of the water to soak up the film of the essential oil. Apply accordingly.
