Herbal Treatments For Coldsby Nancy Grundy
Eucalyptus (see accompanying article), tea tree and thyme are particularly good to have around this time of year. The anti-viral and anti-bacterial nature of these essences help to combat the infections that often arise from colds. Lavender is always useful as it promotes sleep which aids recovery from any illness. Vitamin C is good taken in high doses, and, of course, drink plenty of liquids. Vitamin C taken at the beginning of a cold's onset (500 mg every 2 hours) can prevent the cold from developing. Aromatic baths and massages using the oils of eucalyptus, tea tree, cinnamon and pine may also help to move the toxins out of the body. Cypress is good for excessive mucus. Sandalwood is especially useful for sore throats and loss of voice, diluted 5% and rubbed on the throat externally. A good inhalant can be made from 1 drop eucalyptus, 2 drops thyme, 3 drops tea tree, 2 drops cinnamon, 2 drops pine, 1 pinch of black pepper, 1 drop cedar wood, 1 drop peppermint and 3 drops rosemary. These essences, in combination, have an antiseptic, expectorant and decongestant action.
