Here's To Your Healthy Colon
Alicia Tewell

The intestinal system is the body's waste disposal plant. It generally absorbs waste products from the body so they can be excreted with indigestible food fiber. The intestinal system consists of the small intestine, the colon (or large intestine) and the rectum. The colon generally receives the lion's share of attention in any intestinal system discussion. It is only five feet long but has a two and one half inch diameter, three times the diameter of the small intestine.

Undigested food in liquid form flows from the small intestine into the colon. There most of the water and mineral salts are absorbed back into the body. The semisolid waste remaining is 60 to 70 percent water and 10 to 30 percent bacteria. The rest is indigestible cellulose material, dead cells and other waste materials.

Unfortunately, pollutants in today's society often make it harder for the colon to do its job efficiently. Toxic material is found in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the soil where our food is grown. If we fail to follow the dietary regimen necessary to eliminate these toxic materials, they ultimately end up on the lower bowls, resulting in toxic waste build up.

A toxic colon poisons the body and robs it of nutrients necessary to build healthy cells. A toxic colon also spreads toxins into body tissues and slowly poisons the system, breaking down vitality and resistance. This is when disease strikes.

When food is held up in the small intestine too long, which is often due to a lack of proper bulk or fiber in the diet, fermentation and putrefaction may occur, causing toxic waste to flood the blood stream and lodge in different parts of the body. Many times gas is the result. The colon collects fermentation and putrefactive waste from every part of the system. The smooth muscular walls of the colon contract (called peristalsis) to move waste along the path of elimination. The time it takes to complete the elimination process varies depending on the amount of roughage present.

When the colon is flooded with junk food that the body cannot properly digest, this waste may lodge in colon pockets. If not removed, this waste recycles into the bloodstream, causing serious problems for the body down the road. Thus the need to detoxify and cleanse the bowels to help restore balance in the system.

Insufficient roughage leads to constipation and diarrhea. These conditions can also be caused by nervous stress. The colon works best when it is moderately full. Dietary fiber fills this need. Fiber provides no nutrients to the body, but it does help promote good health because it can absorb many times its weight in water. This aids in maintaining proper bowel elimination or regularity.

High fiber food that can add additional fiber to the diet when necessary includes bran, prunes, psyllium seed or hulls, and other mucilaginous herbs. Another factor in colon health is maintaining a good supply of the beneficial bacteria lactobacillus acidophilus, which performs a number of vital tasks in the colon.

When the colon is nutritionally supported with a diet high in natural fiber, other nutritional components and healthy bacteria, it can function at peak efficiency.
