Flaxseed
The fine linen mentioned in the Bible was spun from flax. The curtains of the Tabernacle were made from it, and the garments worn by the Jewish High Priests were derived from it also. In addition, the clothing worn by Jesus when He was laid to rest in the tomb, including the cloth He was wrapped in, were made from flax. Flax is also a nutritious staple for both man and beast. The ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece, including their immense armies, depended upon flax seed as a staple food source. Few herbs have been held in such high esteem by so many cultures throughout the ages. Essential fatty acids (EFA's) are the primary nutritional component of flax seed. The two key EFA's are linoleic and linolenic. These two fatty acids are essential to the human body. We need these fatty acids but are unable to manufacture them, therefore they must be supplied through the diet. Flax seed oil has the vital ratio of these two EFA's, and therein lies the reason for the oils demand. EFA's are crucial in the process of electron transport, needed for both cellular energy and cell communication. The importance of maintaining adequate levels of EFA's in the body cannot be overstated, as their presence affects every function. EFA's are the most abundant source of energy found in nutrition. EFA's attract oxygen. Then they hold the oxygen in our cell membranes, where the life giving gas protects the cells from corruptive outside influences such as viruses, bacteria and chemical pollutants. EFA's promote the transport of oxygen from the lungs throughout the entire system. Without the presence of EFA's we would literally suffocate from lack of oxygen. Flax seed oil has a beneficial effect on brain function as well. Without the proper amount in a mother's diet, the child can develop learning disabilities. EFA's have a positive effect on mood and perception. It has been used to treat schizophrenics and juvenile delinquents who did not respond to counseling. It has been used to treat depression also. It is also found to relieve fatigue, irritability, headaches, menopausal problems, dry skin, allergies and it is especially useful in the treatment of both rheumatoid- and osteo-arthritis.
