The Ladder Of Success...
Or Is It?

Jill Hiene

It is said in the Bible, and probably many other great writings, that we all must go through the same door in our evolution - "every knee shall bend."

In our lives it can seem that everyone is on a different level. Those who appear to be on a very high rung of the ladder become humble and those on the lowest rungs must be raised up to see themselves in a better light. I wonder, is the doorway to heaven somewhere in the middle of the ladder? Not too high and mighty, but not down on yourself either.

This whole concept of higher and lower is really useless. What good does it do? If we believe we need to be more evolved we will be in a state of effort to get somewhere and get nowhere. If we get too high and mighty the concept of being evolved will give us a big ego. So I am in favor of getting rid of the whole idea of the ladder of success and competition. There is no room for competition when it comes to spirituality.

Competition spreads like an infectious disease and can turn you against yourself and your neighbor. It is so prevalent, and yet so hidden, in our society. Without it where would we be? I suppose the ideal setup is to see what someone else is doing that is a good quality or talent and simply imbibe it through osmosis. This way we could improve our lot in life, enhancing our abilities like children learning from each other by watching.

We learned everything we do from watching others, when we were not self conscious. For some reason, when we try to consciously change, we believe we can do it another way - like through will power and effort. This takes us further away from our goal, because we try and take the law into our own hands and recreate it according to the demands of our personality. When we get caught up in competition with someone we block ourselves from learning from that individual the simplest way - the way children do.
