A
Father's Tribute
By Clark Hodgson
Eulogy from the memorial service of Rev. William Duby I want to thank
you for your gracious invitation to participate in this memorial service
to Rev. Bill. Living a great distance form Berkeley I had fewer opportunities
than many of you to walk with him, to talk with him and worship with him.
Yet I do share with you your love for him, respect for all that he stood
for and admiration for all that was accomplished in a life that ended
too soon.
I
read what he wrote, heard what he had to say and personally was touched
by the power of his faith. I knew him to be an uncommon man, a real find,
a rare gem.
He listened well
so that he understood better;
Experienced hurt, so
he'd know how to heal;
Deepened his faith so he could strengthen his convictions;
Led well because he followed his heart;
Was a great teacher because he was a consummate student.
Of the many accomplishments
of Rev. Bill's life we celebrate today, one is very special to me.
About 15 years
ago, there was a young woman from the city across the Bay who was alone
and directionless. A divine serendipity brought them together. With the
magic which characterized many of Rev. Bill's personal interactions, he
inspired my daughter, Cathleen to believe in herself and to become the
talented, loving person you know her to be today. He lit up her light
and gave her hope to carry on not just yesterday, but today and tomorrow.
She is a tribute, a living memorial to his goodness.
It is the most
precious gift a father could receive; I thank you Rev. Bill.
