    Engagement may seem like an old-fashioned custom that is out of place in today's sophisticated world. However, perhaps the only thing that is out-of-date about engagement is the way we see it. When we think of engagement, pictures of choosing your china pattern, long romantic evenings with the beloved and poodle skirt dates at the soda fountain come to mind.

    Engagement is much more complex than these simplistic notions. The foundation of marriage needs to be the truth, or the love that is born in the heart of two people will fade away and return from whence it came.

    Engagement is the spiritual path towards getting to know each other realistically. It is the waiting period until each is ready for marriage. Marriage cannot take place as long as the reactionary programming of the families causes the couple to butt heads with each other.
Engagement is the time where you are not only getting to know your fiance better but yourself as well. What your mind sees and your emotions feel may be two entirely different things. As you realize a thing or two, your concepts of marriage, love, family and children will undergo vast psychological changes. This is all part of the process of preparing for the marriage.

    Biblically, marriage is defined as two becoming one flesh. This takes place in the act of consummation. First, however, the man must separate from the motherly influences of his upbringing. In doing so, he can't help but give to his wife his undivided attention so that he'll learn more about himself through the union. The wife, in turn departs from her family only to enhance the life of the male. The wife is the mirror for the soul of the husband and the husband is the heart of God for the woman to adore as her beloved. She will become his glory while he will become the glory of God. Neither will have the need for self glory because they are in holy wedlock.

    Their offspring will be the hallowed trademark of the Divine Providence when born out of their union. The marriage vows are spiritual in origin and are ordained by sincerity to be their bond of matrimony. In due time, each will see in the other that what began in the heavens was found to be true on earth and the earth will be much brighter for their respect towards the higher order of life.

    Anything less than this is the mirage of what we have been programmed to believe about marriage. Until this mirage is seen for what it is, the marriage where two people act in the best interests of the other will not happen. It may happen on paper, where you are legally married to each other, but in your heart there will be a schism between you based on lack of respect for how the other sees things. Marriage dispels the mirage when you both reach a state of spiritual maturity to see beyond each others' personality expression to the higher self image.
