Trance Massage The Next Step In RelaxationAn Interview with Donna HartASN: Donna, how long have you been a massage therapist? Donna: Nine years. ASN: Can you tell me a little about what it was like being a Massage Therapist before you learned about trance? Donna: After I graduated from massage school I started working for someone else and I also started doing massages on my own. I found that the biggest problem I ran across was that when I was giving massages I would pick up certain feelings or pictures from the people I was working on. At that time I didn't really know if these pictures or emotions were my own or theirs. Many times after a massage I would feel very emotional. When I was working at a physical therapy clinic I even started taking on actual physical pain from clients. I knew anatomy very well and I knew that after working with a client I was experiencing pain in exactly the same physical area that they were having a problem with. It wouldn't happen all the time, but it happened enough that I recognized that I was somehow taking on their pain. That was when I decided to look around for some place that could actually help me, and it so happened that I tuned into the radio program that is broadcast from the Spiritual Rights Foundation and then I started taking beginning classes at the school. ASN: And when you started taking classes, was your main focus to learn how to heal without taking on the energy? Donna: Yes, but at the time I really didn't have a concept about energy or the psychic space of myself or another. I just thought massage was a nice healing modality, yet I recognized that I had a problem happening from doing massages. ASN: You have been studying energy for many years, and have practiced massage using the techniques and concepts taught at the Spiritual Rights Foundation, which help you to not take on other people's energy. Looking back, what was going on back when you were feeling other people's emotions or pain? Donna: Mainly I was open to taking on that persons energy. I was such a healer that I would do anything to make the person feel better, and I thought it was my job as a massage therapist to make the pain go away using any means. Now when I go to do a massage I have a different focus. Now I look at the client having some responsibility for the outcome of the massage. For example, they have to take some responsibility to relax to help facilitate the healing process. Also at that time I wasn't aware that I was psychically seeing the energy stored in the person's body, as pictures. When I would talk to then about what I was seeing I'd usually get invalidated, either because they didn't know what I was talking about or, if they did, they didn't want to admit the picture was there. I didn't know how to make sense out of all I was seeing. The biggest difference now is that because I am more grounded and more prepared when I go into a massage I can watch the energy versus trying to do something about it. In trance, I'm more of an observer. Also I realized that people have a lot of expectations for me to take on the energy, take their pain away, and when this expectation is there massage becomes unenjoyable for me. It inhibits my creativity. I prefer to intuitively flow with the massage, listen to what that person might be needing at that time. I'm going to a whole new level with massage now where I can enjoy myself, because I do like to give massage. Trance has helped me do this. ASN: You mentioned that when you are in trance and you do a massage you notice a difference. What does it mean when you say you go into trance? Donna: It's an altered state of mind that allows me to let things be. In other words, I'm neutral to what I observe so I don't have to take it on and I can flow more easily with the massage and thereby be more effective. ASN: When you are giving a massage in trance, how is the pain dealt with in a more effective way for the client? Donna: What I notice is that when I am in trance a lot of times the person will naturally let go in the process and release the pain. What I want to start doing is facilitate a trance space for the client so they can use their mind to become more relaxed and let go more easily. A lot of times people come in with so much stress that is like a wall between them really being able to let go and receive. Oftentimes, I would invest a good deal of time just working on getting past this stress by working the musculature. This is basically wasted time. By facilitating a trance state the mental stress could be addressed and released, thereby giving the person more time to enjoy the full benefits of the massage. The mind is a powerful tool, and if used properly can do amazing things to help the body be restored to well being. In trance a person can also explore things they see going on in their body, become aware of the pictures or emotions that go along with the pain or tension that is stored in the body. And they can direct me to certain things they see going on, which is really more effective than just leaving it up to me. I have done this with some people here at the Academy. ASN: Are there any closing thoughts you would like to share? Donna: Ideally massage work addresses both spirit and body. This is why I think trance massage is so valuable because you have an opportunity to use your mind to help facilitate the healing process in the body.
