The Simple Truth About CleansingBy Melanie Nathan
The phrase "to cleanse" has special pertinence with reference to the
removal of dirt, of the washing away of evil. It seems to take us beyond
mere cleaning. Somehow cleaning is something we are well accustomed to
including in our daily regimen, whereas cleansing is something we do as
special or periodic. I have often wondered why? Food: If I were to attempt to fast or only juice, everyday, I would probably not have enough calories to accommodate my hectic lifestyle. After all, I am not a monk in daylong meditation. I have a strenuous work situation and many physically demanding commitments. This cleansing philosophy is a moment by moment and daily event which includes eating three good meals per day. I have divided my intake to include approximately 30-40% whole grains, 15-20% protein, 30-35% vegetables, 10% fruit, not more than 10% fat. It is important to exclude sugars, refined carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners, soda pop, fried foods, tobacco, alcohol and caffeine. I have worked at reducing dramatically, my use of dairy products and only use nonfat yogurt and milk. It is best to avoid cheese, to use egg whites only, minimal butter or margarine, limited amounts of oil using only conola and olive oil. On this program it is preferred I do not replace a meal with fruits. A good source of protein can be supplied by mixing beans and brown rice, tempeh, and low fat tofu. My program specifically excludes red meat. It is absolutely imperative to include lightly steamed vegetables such as broccoli, kale, dandelion, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale, bok choy, garlic, artichoke, carrots, daikon, beets, parsley root. Other vegetables, highly recommended include Ginger, kuzu, wakame, hijiki, blue green algae, spirulina, parsnips, and kelp. My whole grain world has opened up enormously with the likes of whole wheat breads, brown rice, millet, barley, oats, kamut rye, soba noodles, basmati rice, rice cakes, somen noodles, amarinth, quinoia, bulgar, wild rice, corn, buckwheat and rice milk. Herbs: This is the fun part. I use herbs as cleansing food. This is separate from the herbs that I use medicinally when I experience, what is now a rare occurrence, an ailment. My program has been somewhat diverse and my regimen changes with my herbalist's guidance. The key to effective results, I have come to learn, is a combination of, not only the actual herbs which I use, but also the quality of the herbs that I purchase. Having a good herbalist helps in this regard. The basic regimen that I follow includes blood purifying herbs such as Echinacea, Red Clover blossom, Yellow Dock, Alfalfa, Barberry, Nettles, Cleavers and Hyssop. I use these in combination for the synergistic effect. I also use colon and liver cleansing herbs such as Fennel, Licorice, Gentian, Milk Thistle, Sarsaparilla, Dandelion and Fenugreek. In addition I use tiny amounts of Cascara Segrada when I would like a slight laxative effect and Slippery Elm to provide a soothing coating to the intestinal lining. For extra energy and building I have added a building formula that consists of herbs such as Ginseng, Gotu Kola, Ginkgo and Astralagus. Every few months I use a product called REDNOP TEA which is the same as the ESSIAC (anti cancer ) formula which assists with some extra purification. The herbs include Sheep Sorrel, Turkey Rhubarb, Burdock, Slippery Elm, Pau De Arco and Red Clover Blossom. I do not use any vitamins or minerals as I seem to be getting plenty of this from all the good food that I am eating, including the herbs. It is a good idea to drink a lot of toxic free water and to use as much organic food and herbs as is available. I truly believe that with such a regimen, one can be in a constant state of cleansing
