Aromatherapy and its Healing PropertiesBy Nancy GrundyAromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for the use of healing and vitality. Aroma is the oldest means of reaching and influencing the deepest human instincts. Aromatherapy means to treat with aroma through inhalation. The response to aroma can be as quick as three seconds. Essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant kingdom. Essential oils are the subtle, volatile liquids that are distilled from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, roots bushes and seeds. They contain oxygenating molecules, that transport the nutrients to the cells of the body. The oxygenating molecules in essential oils help the body receive and assimilate nutrients to maintain health. Aromatherapy is a phrase coined by Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, Ph.D., in 1920 who was a French cosmetic chemist. While working in his laboratory, he had an accident that burned his hand and forearm with 3rd-degree burns. He plunged his arm into a vat of lavender oil, thinking it was water. To his surprise, the burning slowly decreased and then stopped within a few moments. Over a period of time, with continued applications, the burn completely headed without a trace of a scar. As a chemist he discovered that lavender contained tremendous healing properties. He and his colleagues over many years of studying discovered that essential oils contain antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties as well as being powerful oxygenators with the ability to carry nutrients into the cells. It has been said that when essential oils are diffused into the home, they have the ability to increase the oxygen in the atmosphere. Oils increase ozone and negative ions in the home, which inhibit bacterial growth. This prevents and destroys existing odors from mold, cigarettes, animals, etc. They remove dust particles out of the air and, when diffused in the home, can be the greatest filtration system. Essential oils are recognized as being the greatest substances for increasing cellular oxygen through their normal function. When applied to the body by rubbing on the feet, essential oils will travel throughout the body and affect every cell, within 20 minutes. They have a lasting effect for as long as five months from only one application. Diffusing is the most common method of using essential oils. A diffuser is a special air pump designed to disburse the oils in a microfine vapor into the atmosphere where they stay suspended for several hours to reduce bacteria, fungus, mold, and freshen the air with natural fragrances. This is a perfect way to improve your home, work or study environment, either to help you relax, relieve tension and headaches, dispel odors, or just create an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Essential oils, when diffused, have been reported to improve immune function and create a feeling of balance and well-being. With the coming fall and winter months, I have picked Cypress and Frankincense to learn about for this fall issue of the American Spirit. There are over 200 essential oils (or combinations of different oils) to learn about.
Cypress Oil is clear and has a woody nutty quality with a hint of spice. It seems more of a masculine fragrance, because of its woodiness. It smells similar to juniper and pine, and it is also from the coniferous family and blends well with them. It is a relaxing and refreshing bath oil. It is anti-bacterial, anti-infectious, anti-microbial, anti-mucous, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, lymphatic, decongestant, prostrate decongestant, refreshing and relaxing. It may be beneficial for bathtubs, asthma, strengthening blood capillary walls, reducing cellulite, circulatory systems, colds, spasmodic coughs, edema, energy, hemorrhoids, influenza, insomnia, intestinal parasites, laryngitis, liver disorders, lung circulation, menstrual pain, muscular cramps, nervous tension, pancreas insufficiencies, pleurisy, pulmonary tuberculosis, rheumatism, skin cares, spasms, throat, varicose veins, water retention, whooping coughs and wounds. It is NOT for use after menopause. It can be applied directly on areas of concern. It blends well with bergamont, clary sage, juniper, lavender, lemon, orange, and sandalwood. It influences, strengthens, and helps ease the feeling of loss. It creates grounding, security, and helps to heal the emotions.
The latin name is 'boswellia thurifera' and it is a yang oil. It was being imported from Egypt nearly 5000 years ago. It was first used as incense, and later in cosmetics and toiletries. In the form of incense, it was also used to fumigate sick people, in order to drive out the evil spirits that were causing the sickness. The Egyptians used it for rejuvenating face masks. Frankincense was very highly prized in the old world. In ancient times, it was as valuable as gems or precious metals, hence the offering of gold and frankincense and myrrh to the infant Christ. It was known that frankincense was very good for the immune system. Its value was that it had considerable influence on the economy of certain countries and often the cause of political dispute. The gum in it comes from a small tree that grows in Arabia and Somaliland. It is holy oil in Middle East. In ancient times it was used for improving communication with the Creator. It may be used for: aging, allergies, asthma, bites(insect and snake), bronchitis, cancer, carbuncles, catarrh, colds, coughs, depression, diarrhea, diphtheria, gonorrhea, headaches, healing, hemorrhaging, herpes, high blood pressure, inflammation, jaundice, laryngitis, meningitis, nervous conditions, pneumonia, respiratory problems, preventing scarring, sciatic pain, sores, spiritual awareness, staph, strep, stress, syphilis, T. B., tension, tonsillitis, typhoid, ulcers, wounds and warts. It helps to oxygenate the pineal and pituitary. It may help in improving one's mental attitude, which may help to strengthen the immune system. Apply it directly to the areas of concern. It blends well with all oils. It increases spiritual awareness and aids in focusing in meditation. It is used to help any condition where excess fluid is present; those who have heavy colds, bronchitis, respiratory problems, asthma. It calms the nervous system of those with urinary tract infections and it helps to heal stubborn wounds. Just as it has a physically drying effect, it also has a metaphysically drying effect on the emotional problems. It helps those who tend to gush and who cannot stop talking. It comforts those who find physical contact difficult, and those who are frightened, nervous or neurotic. It is NOT to be used by pregnant women and those with severe kidney disease. |
